چکیده

In the Hudson Bay/James Bay Lowlands, along the coasts of Banks Island, and along the eastern coast of Baffin Island are continuous and extensive sections in Quaternary sediments. These sections are rich in marine fossils, buried peats, and soils and contain a wide variety of glaciagenic sediments together with glacial marine units and littoral deposits. Lake muds are also fairly common. All three areas possess very long records that may extend to the early Quaternary and Pliocene. The events of the last glaciation (Wisconsinan, Foxe, Amundsen) are interpreted in terms of lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, and aminostratigraphy. Relative and "absolute" dating control is provided by radiocarbon dating of events that span the last 50 ka, and in particular the last 11 ka, and some age control is also provided by several U -series dates on marine molluscs. Regional correlations are based on comparisons of amino acid ratios from marine shells. Suggested correlations during the last glaciation (Wisconsinan, Foxe, Amundsen) are:

Winter Air Temperature Change over the Terrestrial Arctic , 1961 – 1990

We evaluate two approaches to spatially interpolating winter surface air-temperature fields over the terrestrial Arctic from available weather-station records. We then examine 30 yr (1961–1990) of winter air-temperature change over the terrestrial Arctic through a timetrend analysis of interpolated winter air-temperature fields. We used monthly average air temperatures from 4984 Arctic station ...

Modern Benthic Foraminifer Distribution in the Amerasian Basin, Arctic Ocean

A total of 38 box cores were collected from the Amerasian Basin, Arctic Ocean during the U.S. Geological Survey 1992 (PI92-AR) and 1993 (PI93-AR) Arctic Cruises aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Icebreaker Polar Star. In addition, the cruises collected geophysical data, piston cores and hydrographic data to address the geologic and oceanographic history of the western Arctic Ocean. This paper reports...

Light-absorbing impurities in Arctic snow

Absorption of radiation by ice is extremely weak at visible and near-ultraviolet wavelengths, so small amounts of light-absorbing impurities in snow can dominate the absorption of solar radiation at these wavelengths, reducing the albedo relative to that of pure snow, contributing to the surface energy budget and leading to earlier snowmelt. In this study Arctic snow is surveyed for its content...
